Learning to Read

At Ashcott School we start our children's reading adventure by using a scheme called 'Big Cat' by Collins which matches our phonics teaching and gives the children a range of fiction and non-fiction texts to develop their reading skills and comprehension.  We have invested a lot of time and funding to make sure that all of our early reading scheme books are linked to the phonics sounds the children will be learning to ensure they are able to apply this skill alongside their enjoyment of reading. As children move through the school they have access to a wide range of banded books from OUP which continues their reading journey in a systematic yet engaging way.

Reading at Home

The importance of reading with your child daily, and sharing a love of books at home, is key to their success.  Reading and discussing texts enables children to gain a deeper understanding of what they read and their love for reading will increase with this understanding.
